October 2019 Outrunning the blizzard

Re-writing the trip plan in the face of a storm, not for the first time.In 2017, we had to pick up our RV in Boston during the winter of nor’easters and travel south as fast as we could with a blizzard nipping at our tail hitch.Fast forward to October 2019.Now we were waking up in Sioux Falls SD to a blizzard heading our way.We were at the bottom edge of the storm, which was moving north east. Online we found a livecam in Sturgis.Snow was falling and street plows were at work. We made a simple plan to abandon our trip across South Dakota. The weather channel charted the storm moving north east through the Dakotas all through the day. With only 15 hours between us and northern New Mexico, we decided to haul it south down the I- 29.Driving into Omaha we saw flood water rising to the side of the highway and lanes barricaded where the water had started to cover the highway. We reached Council Bluffs where we camped in the Cracker Barrel parking lot.Clear sky and full moon. The weather stabilized as we drove through Kansas. We crossed the Cimaron River into Oklahoma. Every mile we drove prompted the question:“what happens if we just keep going?”The answer came in the form of a road sign - Welcome to Texas.Instead of shoveling snow in South Dakota, here we were camping andhiking the Palo Duro Canyon near Amarillo.
